Like rubbernecking at an accident on the highway, I really try NOT to look at youtube comments. But for some reason I found myself drifting aimlessly downward into the realm of the comments section for Regular Car Reviews’ latest video, on a 2014 320i. While clearly not his first BMW review, he does delve into the perception, no, the stigma, attached to BMW drivers and WHY that might be the case. He even cites U niversity Studies!
His argument centers on the possibility that people don’t necessarily
drive any differently in BMWs
, it’s that you
notice
when a BMW cuts you off in traffic;
more so than if it was just another F-150 or bulbous CUV/crossover/whatever. Be that as it may, that’s not
what I’m here to talk about.
The comment I picked up on, which I think is perhaps the most insightful - or at minimum, the least ignorant
, trolling, or simply
offensive - I’ve ever come across in the y
outube comment department. I don’t remember the exact wording and really, can’t be bothered to dive into that dumpster again, so here’s a summary:
- Drivers of NEW BMWs tend to be the jackasses who make a bad name for everybody.
[
I
take this to mean, newER, late-model, whatever,
probably at a financial stretch. I also think this neatly contains the mid-level-executive-2-year-lease-type who buys one
for the badge
and man, he’s gonna let you KNOW he bought a BMW.]
- Drivers of OLD BMWs tend to be more careful, courteous drivers [I’m thinking, over 10 years old, generally stock or lightly modified - to exclude the stanceBRO crowd, because reasons. See for example: most of the cars on Bring A Trailer. ]
Think this:
As opposed to this:
Full disclosure: I currently drive a 2003 BMW 3-series wagon, and I like to think I drive it with courtesy at all times - I don’t drive any differently when I’m in the BMW versus any other car, including my dad-tastic Volvo wagon, or my ‘61 Ford... except that the ‘61 Ford is a bit slower no matter how you drive it.
Does Mr. Regular have a good point? Does the commenter?
Either way, the turn signal jokes will outlive the internet.
Discuss.

I might cut it back 15+ years, gotta watch out for E60s and maybe E46.

Actually, yeah - to some extent you’re going to get “kids” (if you will) - buying their first car and thinking that cheap BMW on Craigslist will impress the girls. That and I think the average age of a car on the road in the US is something like 10 years, maybe even 11.

I kinda agree. N ot all German luxury car drivers are douches but unfortunately , German luxury is the car of choice for the mid-level manager douche bro. And it is really hard to ignore or forget that car that was weaving through 4 lanes of traffic at 20+ over the already speeding traffic........(Seems to be Audi’s most often in my area)

i dunno.. over here the nice looking e30s and brand spanking new lease mobiles tend to drive pretty okay
gotta watch out for the ratty e30s and 10 year old basemodel 3 series tho...

After a certain age, the cars tend to not be attractive to posers. In my area, it seems most E39s now are either enthusiast-driven and cared for, or bangers on the way to being used up and thrown away. Same for E36. These won’t attract those trying to pretend rich/cool for cheap. Mid 00s models still seem to attract some of an irritating e lement. Wait a decade, maybe it will change.

It only gets worse with each subsequent owner. Or so I've been told. Sorry. :(

Around here I think the rust accelerates that transition. I don’t see many E46 at all. I can’t remember the last E36 I saw, just being driven as a DD.

A h west coast life, not much rust . I still see multiple E30 every week, there’s a guy in my building with a red E36 sedan

I remember a thing by DeMuro a few years ago about Firebirds, and how they have the most owners of any car he’s seen.... seems to check out.

They’re out there. Seem to be driven by older people who have probably had them for 15+ years and have taken excellent care of them.

To further complicate the issue because BMWs have the douche-reputation nobody lets you merge in traffic. Ever. Especially(?) if it’s a red E36. Yes I kept my blinker fluid topped up and used them. So just to get into the lane you need to be in you have to drive like an asshat and at some point cut someone off to force yourself in , reinforcing the stereotype and continuing the snowballs progress down the slippery slope.

Ah. Well it was the guy who jumped his new bmw over a median after trying to slide it leaving a c/c or something
